Post Bariatric Surgery

Objective: 'Removal of Sagging After Weight Loss'.

It is one of the surgical procedures that I’m particularly interested in. Today, 'obesity' has become a serious problem due to sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits. Obese people with excess weight (with a body/mass index over 35) cannot even perform their daily activities.

The number of people who apply for weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) is increasing with every passing day, as a result of the extremely high prevalence of obesity and the inability of individuals to get rid of their excess weights on their own. People who have lost a large amount of weight on their own or as a result of weight loss surgery begin to have sagging problems in their bodies after a while. When a person is overweight, the subcutaneous adipose tissue keeps the skin stretched, but when this adipose tissue is lost in consequence of weight loss, the skin sags down like a deflated balloon. In such a case, the person has gotten rid of his or her excess weight, but still could not get the body shape that he or she wanted. Post-bariatric surgery performed based on a personalized plan makes it possible to eliminate sagging skin caused by weight loss.

Who Are Suitable Candidates for Body-Lift Surgery?

People whose skin has sagged after weight loss, who have had weight loss surgery at least 1 year ago, whose weight has been stable for the last 6 months, and whose body mass index (weight kg/height² m) is below 30 are suitable candidates for post-bariatric surgery.

Can A Single Operation Be Adequate To Eliminate Sagging After Weight Loss?

Sagging after weight loss occurs not only in a single part of the body, but in the whole body. Therefore, this operation is also called body-lift. Sagging skin commonly develops in the abdomen, legs, buttocks, arms, back, breasts and face. It is not possible to perform an operation that involves such a widespread area in a single session. It requires a personalized operation plan because there is not any standard operation plan. Sagging in the whole body can sometimes be removed in 3 or 4 sessions, depending on the width of the area, where the body-lift procedure will be performed. Although the sequence of operations varies from person to person, the first session usually involves the correction of the abdomen, waist, buttocks and outer parts of the legs.

(belt lipectomy)

What is Belt-Lipectomy?

Belt-lipectomy is usually the first step of body-lift procedures. Sagging is corrected all around in the abdomen, waist, and buttocks. The flattening of the buttocks can be eliminated and the laxity in the abdominal muscles is corrected in the same session.

Operation

Body-lift operations are performed under general anesthesia. The procedure required 1 or 2-night hospital stay, depending on the extent of the operation. Patients can begin to perform their daily activities within 1 week on average. For each operation, it is recommended to wear a corset suitable for the application area for a period of 1 month on average. It is recommended to avoid smoking at least 1 month before and after the operation.

Does Body-Lift Operations Leave a Scar?

Since body-lift operations involve incisions for the removal of excess and sagging skin, these incisions leave scars. Although scars are more noticeable in the early postoperative period, thet become less noticeable over time as their colors become close to the skin color. Surgical procedures called belt-lipectomy that involve corrections in the abdomen, waist and buttocks, and also surgical procedures performed on the breast area leave scars that remain inside the underwear.
